Product Environmental Profile (PEP) helps Reka Cables’ customers manage their carbon dioxide emissions

One of Reka Cables’ sustainability goals is to reduce the carbon footprint of the cable industry over the entire life cycle of cables. An essential part of this work is the Product Environmental Profile (PEP).

Product Environmental Profile (PEP) is a third-party verified life cycle assessment that analyses the environmental impact of a product throughout its entire life cycle. The PEP is a similar document to the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).

“The PEP and the EPD are both so-called Type III environmental declarations and are based on the same standards (ISO 14040 and ISO 14025). Perhaps the more commonly known term, the EPD is used across various industries, whereas the PEP was developed especially for the electrical and electronics industry,” says Quality and Sustainability Manager Kari Ingalsuo from Reka Cables.

What information does the PEP contain and why?

The PEP provides information about the environmental performance of the product. According to Ingalsuo, the PEP considers the environmental impact of a product throughout its entire life cycle in relation to the manufacture of the raw materials, any transport, the manufacturing process, the energy consumption during use and end-of-life.

In addition to taking into account the carbon footprint of the product, it includes information on the effects on resource depletion, ozone depletion, water consumption, eutrophication and acidification.

“The PEP can help companies achieve sustainable building certifications and meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements. The PEP is a valuable tool for actors such as network builders, installation companies, distributors and electricity distribution operators in assessing and optimising their carbon dioxide emissions,” says Ingalsuo.

Five product families already come with PEP documentation

With the PEP survey, Reka Cables wants to demonstrate its commitment to environmental responsibility and offer its customers transparent information about the environmental impact of its products.

“Our goal is to procure a third-party verified life cycle assessment, either the EDP or the PEP, for more than 70% of our sales by the year 2025,” says Ingalsuo.

Reka Cables already offers PEP documentation for its five product families of installation cables (LiteRex), power cables (PoweRex), medium voltage cables (DryRex) and wind farm cables (DryRex Nordic Wind).
